Oscar's library is officially open!

We are delighted that Oscar's Library at Banda Hill School, Dedza, Malawi is now officially open!  The library, funded through our overseas programme, was built by the charity Inspire Malawi, in conjunction with the school community, and is the first and only library in this rural area of the country.

Inspire Malawi first started working with Banda Hill School in 2016.  Since then the relationship has gone from strength to strength.  Something that has in no small part been down to the inspirational Headteacher and leadership committee at the school.  This dynamic and forward-thinking team are committed to providing education for all and have worked tirelessly to develop the educational opportunities for children in the area.

When Inspire Malawi first visited, the school was in a very poor condition, yet despite the lack of adequate classrooms and equipment, it was buzzing with energy.  The teachers were clearly keen to teach and the children keen to learn.   Since that initial visit in 2016, with the support of Inspire Malawi, the school now has 5 classrooms, a staff room and store rooms.

When Fonthill were approached we were keen to support such an active and dynamic community; and were delighted to be to fund the next stage of the schools' development with the construction of a purpose-built library.  Inspire Malawi were on the ground to manage the build, and once ready there were many volunteers on hand to decorate the interior and donate books and resources.

Thanks in particular to the volunteer teachers - the interior of the library is a bright, colourful and inspirational place, that offers a safe environment for children to develop a love of reading and of life-long learning.

The new library has lovingly been named 'Oscar's Library' in memory of former Worth School pupil Oscar Jefferies, with a beautiful naming plaque unveiled at opening ceremony.   What an opening day it was, with the whole community turning out and the fabulous Gule Wamkula performers dancing in celebration.

We are thrilled to have been a part of the future of this wonderful school and wish everyone many, many happy hours of reading and learning at Oscar's Library.
