Young City Reads - The BIG READ for Sussex Primary School Children

Young City Reads (YCR) is an annual BIG READ for primary school children across Sussex.  It is the largest children's shared reading project in the South.

Set up by Brighton based charity, Collected Works, it aims to INSPIRE children to read for pleasure, EMPOWER them to believe in themselves and CREATE thinkers of the future. This year's event launched on World Book Day in March and will culminate with a big, live schools' event at Brighton Dome during Brighton's May Festival.

One brilliant book each year, is selected for school classes to read, creatively explore and discuss.  This year's book is the amazing Malamander by Thomas Taylor.   Once schools and class teachers have signed up to participate, Collected Works provides a series of teacher resources that the children work through over the 10-weeks of the event.

With funding from Fonthill, over one hundred children from schools in Brighton's areas of high deprivation, will have the opportunity to take part.  The funding has allowed the provision of free books, additional support resources and free tickets to the big celebratory event.  We are delighted to be supporting these young people and helping to foster a life-long love of reading.
