News from our Partners on the Covid-19 Emergency Support - Ocean Stars, Sri Lanka
We are delighted to report on our latest Covid-19 emergency fund update from Ocean Stars Trust. The Charity was set up in 2004, following the devastating impact of the Boxing Day tsunami, to support the re-establishment of education in some of the poorest and most remote regions of Sri Lanka.
Since then it has grown to support 21 pre-schools in four key regional centres across the Country, helping to provide assistance for teacher employment, direct support to over 150 children annually to enable them to attend school, as well as developing a key focus on teacher training and the quality of the curriculum and learning in their school network.
The past couple of years have been extremely difficult for the Charity, with their work severely affected in 2019 by the Easter Day bombings in the Country and now in 2020, the impacts of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite these extremely tough times Ocean Stars has maintained it's support, finding flexible and adaptable means to overcome the challenges they have faced. We are delighted to have supported their recent Covid-19 emergency support request to provide a tablet and associated teacher training for each of the schools they support.
As part of the need to develop a responsive online approach, in light of Covid-19 restrictions, Operations Manager and founder Dilanee Bunter said 'the provision of tablets will contribute to the improvement of teaching and learning through improved communication, access to online resources and shared learning in the network.'
The Ocean Stars team have been extremely quick to get the tablets distributed and the teacher training in place. We hope that the support we have been able to provide, as part of the wider interventions the team are putting in place, ensure that the great work continues to support those most in need at this time and beyond.
